A Brief Overview Of Cloud Computing Technology

October 20, 2014

Though cloud storage solutions are becoming increasingly popular these days, there are many not-so-tech-savvy users, who are not familiar with the technology yet. Some users are not familiar with the concept and have no idea about how does cloud computing work. Therefore, let us check out the newest cloud storage technology in brief.

How does cloud computing work

The term ‘cloud’ refers to a data storage location available 24/7. This means that you can upload and download files from this ‘cloud’ at your convenience, and from any location around the globe. This significantly reduces the IT infrastructure costs.

How does cloud computing work as a data backup solution?

First, you have to subscribe to a cloud storage service by choosing a data storage plan according to your requirements. Intense competition among the cloud service providers has really brought down the subscription charges. So, this is a good time to sign up for a new cloud storage account. But before that, make sure that you have a steady non-intermittent internet connection.

Once you have signed up for the service, you can either login to the data storage account from your browser or use an app provided by the service provider for the same. You can also synchronize a particular folder in your system to your online cloud storage account. When done, anything you store in this folder will be automatically copied into the cloud server.

How does cloud computing work as a software service platform?

Yet another type of cloud service is the software-as-a-service platform. Here, you will get access to cloud-based software applications, which, you can use by logging into the cloud service account. A good example is the MS Office 365 service. Instead of buying the expensive MS Office software package for your office staff, you can subscribe to the Office 365 cloud service, where you can use the same software virtually for a monthly or annual fee.

The main benefit here, apart from the cost savings, is that the service would be automatically updated with the latest software and technologies. So, you do not have to worry about updating it every now and then. On the other hand, if you are buying a software product instead, you have to pay for the new version every one or two years. In short, you will be saving a lot of money by subscribing to such cloud-based services.
